Another pitfall is to let the other person have all the control of a new relationship. You are so intent on having the other person like you that you will only want to do what they want. Sometimes that means meeting the friends and family way too quickly. Claire says that it is a mistake to get to know those closer to him before you know him well enough. Getting to know a person can vary in time.
Another challenge in new love is when to tell them about your past. Yes, sometimes the skeletons also need to come out of the closet. No one is perfect, there always has to be a catch. Maybe he snores or was addicted to leather porn? Maybe your past is that you shagged every guy who marched at the Mardi Gras….
But the biggest pitfall is saying the L word. When do you say “I love you”? During sex? After 1 a month? On the dance floor? Do you have to say it when he says it? Claire says that you should say it when it feels right. There is no timeframe and no need to reciprocate if it does not feel right.
