Over the weekend Jenny and I went to this one day personal development course. I am a big fan of personal development. If you are not constantly learning…what is the point of life? As a good wanna be Buddhist, life is all about constant improvement.

Over the weekend Jenny and I went to this one day personal development course. I am a big fan of personal development. If you are not constantly learning…what is the point of life? As a good wanna be Buddhist, life is all about constant improvement.

My friend Victor had recommended the course. It was an introductory session into NLP, aka neuro-linguistic programming. NLP is a personal development system developed in the early 1970s that uses a toolbox of strategies and beliefs about human perception and subjective experience.

NLP’s core idea is that an individual’s thoughts, gestures and words interact to create one’s perception of the world. By changing one’s outlook, you can improve your altitudes and actions.

I had attended similar personal development courses in the past, mostly for work. On paper..these courses offer great tips. The problem I have with some of these courses is they can border on evangelical cults i.e. “life changing” “the journey” “surrender” and “let the group heal you.” The other issue is that at times they do not really make sense i.e. “you are a being because you are and you will be because you are being…huh?”

So Jenny and I took everything with a grain of salt and had a good laugh! We were told to “own our space.” This meant basically that we need to own our feelings and not blame others for how we are feeling. We all have four powers: the power to think, speak, feel and act. All makes sense, but if you sign up for the $2,000 course you will really get the secret to a happy life! and you will change your life. Surrender!

So Jenny and I left early. We realised we were not ready for that “journey.” We would much rather go to Europe or Tahiti for less money.
